This is it. Michael Jackson. No. Our first application for the Mac OS X platform. Did you ever wanted to export your Exchange Server contacts based on their given category? It is not possible. This is why we created this simple One Button App, which will enable you to do just that.
We decided to invest some time in making this available for others as well and noticed that it is actually taking much more effort than we initially thought. Improving the usability, testing, coding, testing, coding again, bugs, bugs, bugs. Writing a documentation, putting in online, discovering more bugs – this really eats up a lot of time. But what doesn’t right?
In case you're curious about what to use the Exchange Category Exporter for, let us tell you a little story of how we actually developed this app:
We designed a small booklet informing the reader about our services. After the printouts arrived in our office we wanted to mail it out to all our customers and potential new clients. All our contacts are stored on our Microsoft Exchange Server. Our former intern had the assignment to assign all the eligible contacts to a new category called “Booklet”. We did not want to create a new contacts folder to avoid duplicates. Assigning the contacts to a new category seemed like the best idea. Until we wanted to export them – it did not work. You cannot export contacts solely based on a single category.
This is why we wrote a small Perl script to connect to our Exchange Server account and export only the categorized contacts and write them in an Excel compatible XLS file – all done right from the command line. The XLS file was the perfect source for our serial letter printing job in Word.
As we found the script very useful we decided to put up a simple graphical interface on top of it – so anyone could comfortably use it without the need to “code” on the command line. Our goal was simple – One Button. That’s it. We made it. It’s here. Published. We got so distracted with the Exchange Category Exporter - we forgot to send out those booklets.
The last sentence and the last two words are dedicated to Yasemin Can – former Studio Istanbul Internee and Designer of the fabulous Exchange Category Exporter icon – THANK YOU.
